Project Objectives

Lewisham Council required an open spaces assessment as a key reference document for its emerging Local Plan. Arkwood were commissioned to deliver this for the authority. The project involved a survey of the quality of over 300 open spaces across the borough including parks, open spaces, nature reserves, transport corridors and river valleys. Our work included the identification of sites that were of strategic significance to the borough’s greenspace provision where a change in planning designation might offer a degree of additional protection to green infrastructure in the face of development pressures.

Issues Challenges and Outcomes

The project involved the collection of data across a significant portfolio of green space. Coordination of our findings with the borough’s own assessment of the quality of its spaces had to be carefully considered. Public consultation with key stakeholders was critical to the successful adoption of the assessment and the eventual adoption of the Local Plan
