Nuneaton Greenspace Strategy

Arkwood were commissioned by Nuneaton and Bedworth Council to deliver a GS strategy for the borough as it is set to increase in population in the coming years. The Greenspace Strategy will set out the basis for a plan to improve Nuneaton and Bedworth’s greenspace and provides economic metrics for the value of services flows from green infrastructure.

Project Objectives

Arkwood delivered a Parks and Greenspace Strategy for the council to focus on health and wellbeing, recreational value, carbon sequestration and air quality regulation. The Parks and Greenspace Strategy will play a vital role in ensuring that there is sufficient supply of good quality greenspace in response to a projected increase of 7.5% in the population of the borough by 2023. The strategy can also put in train measures to protect the capacity of green infrastructure to continue to deliver benefit flows into the future and to address the emergencies that we currently face.

Issues, Challenges, and Outcomes

To prepare the greenspace strategy, there was a vast volume of data analysis and mapping that needed to be undertaken. Then with this information that we collated, we then needed to make this information digestible and legible for further use for the development of the wider plan for the future of the borough.

Due to Nuneaton undergoing a population increase, there are several issues that needed to be addressed in the Greenspace Strategy. With many commuters coming into Coventry, this impacts carbon emissions and creates high traffic congestion across the borough of Warwickshire, with it primarily being focused in Nuneaton. This therefore increases airborne pollutants such as Nitrous Dioxide, which is associated with road transport. Green Infrastructure becomes ever more important for improving air quality for the residents of Nuneaton.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to the effects of climate change, so previsions to mitigate against negative effects have been implemented such as SUDS next to roads and other measures to prevent flooding.
