Project Objectives

The project is focusing on the restoration of the key elements of the landscape composition – the Parterre Banks, the Grand Ascent to Observatory Hill, One Tree Hill and the Flower Garden. In parallel, the design team is developing the Activity Plan an Interpretation Strategy and a Dispersal Strategy (to encourage greater use of every corner of the park). A Corporate Natural Capital Account is being developed for the project that will assess the value of the park as a cultural and natural heritage asset.

Issues Challenges and Outcomes

Arkwood acted as Lead Consultant in the development of a bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This culminated in the award of a grant of £4.5 million in December 2017. Arkwood were re-appointed to lead the Development and Delivery phases in January 2018.

The project is concerned with the restoration of one of the most significant baroque landscapes in the UK and has multiple stakeholders ranging from statutory consultees and specialist consultees to local residents and everyday users. The project is complex and requires considerable co-ordination between the client, different design team members and other design teams working on different aspects of the scheme.

Greenwich Park Revealed is a singular opportunity to restore the majesty of one of the UK’s iconic landscapes and to celebrate its importance as a repository of history and its status as a treasured public open space.
