Arkwood are delighted to have been appointed by Lambeth Council as a part of their ‘Soak up Lambeth’ project to devise a SuDS strategy for William Bonney Estate and Alphonsus Estate/Teignmouth Flats. We have been commissioned for RIBA Stages 1-6 where we are working with Andrew Forshaw of Forshaw Gauld to retrofit sustainable drainage solutions in existing spaces around buildings which are mainly made up of short-mown grass, providing little to no protection from flooding. In turn, the implementation of new SuDS in this flood prone area will provide enhanced amenity space for local residents and alleviate some of the flooding concerns further down in the catchment.
We are also working with Andrew and Lambeth Council on a SuDS scheme for Norwood Park, which is also a part of Lambeth Council’s ‘Soak up Lambeth’ project. For this project, we devised a masterplan, focusing on attenuation methods such as leaky dams, attenuation basins, and planted swales. Lambeth is prone to flooding due to several lost and culverted rivers that run underneath the borough. Like much of London, the Victorian sewer system is not equipped to deal with the surface water flows. All of these projects in tandem will help the borough address flooding issues while also aiding in enhancing greenspaces, biodiversity and mental and physical health
